Participating Schools

We’re pleased to say 95 schools participated in Shoo the Flu during the 2019–2020 season. Did yours? If so, we’d love to hear your feedback.

Ask about Shoo the Flu Vaccine Days at your student’s school.
If your student’s school didn’t participate, tell them you want to Shoo the Flu next flu season.

For Parents

• Consent Form
  Shoo the Flu is finished providing free flu vaccine for students this season. The 2020-2021 consent form will be posted before Flu Vaccine Days in the fall.

• Flu Shot Vaccine Information Statement
  Contains important information in multiple languages about the injection form of the flu vaccine (the flu shot).

• Notice of Privacy Practices
  Explains how participating student information will be protected by the Alameda County Department of Public Health.

• California Immunization Registry (CAIR)
  CAIR is a confidential and secure computer system that makes vaccination information available to healthcare providers. Shoo the Flu will enter all vaccination records in CAIR as allowed by law. Unless you note otherwise on the consent form, Shoo the Flu will also make your student’s vaccination record available for healthcare providers to review.

In the News

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that pediatricians offer the injectable form of the vaccine to all children 6 months and older as soon as it becomes available, preferably by the end of October. The AAP recommends the injectable flu vaccine as the primary choice for children because it has provided the most consistent protection against all strains of the flu virus in recent years. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the flu vaccine should be given to everyone 6 months and older, as it is the best option for protection during the upcoming season. Read more.

While the flu shot continues to work well and will be available at Shoo the Flu Vaccine Days, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points to new data showing the nasal mist vaccine was ineffective from 2013 to 2016.

The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees with new recommendations that healthcare providers should not use the nasal mist flu vaccine in the upcoming 2016-2017 season due to poor effectiveness. Read more.

Alameda County Public Health Department is offers free flu vaccines to schoolchildren. To ease the pain of the flu shot, nasal mists were offered in 110 public schools throughout Oakland in 2014.
